COINS - Christian Outreach in Newbury Schools

COINS has been taking the good news of Jesus to the children in Newbury's schools for 20 years.

With the Covid-19 Pandemic closing Schools, the COINS teams have been able to adapt and still take the good news of Jesus to schools in Newbury!

History

Since 1984 Christians in and around Newbury have been interested in working in schools and supporting staff in various ways.  COINS Trust was established in 1996 as the opportunities for input in to curriculum of local schools became greater than volunteers alone could accomplish.

Working with Scripture Union to set up COINS and local churches and individuals who gave huge amounts of support, we took on our first Secondary Schools' worker: Andy Noble.  Tonia Matthews succeeded Andy and in 1999 we appointed our first two Primary School workers including Jacqui Gardner.

COINS currently has an expanding team of workers and volunteers led by Tania Wolak who work with both schools and youth workers and volunteers from local churches.

Values

On which we don’t compromise:

    • The transforming power of Jesus through the Bible and prayer

    • The significance of the gospel message

    • Best practice in everything we do

    • The value of children and young people

    • The need for good relationships

    • Quality partnerships with schools and churches

Romans 10:11-17 says,

“ . . . As the Scripture says, 'Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.' . . . Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.  How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?  And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?  And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!' . . . Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the word of Christ.”

This passage from the Bible is part of the driving force behind our choice of vision statement.  It sums up clearly how Christians are to handle the gospel message of salvation.  We are to bring the saving message of Jesus to whoever we can.  In the case of COINS, we work with children and young people in Newbury schools, helping them to hear and understand the message of Jesus in a way that supports and enriches the lives of local schools and enhances the curriculum.

Governance

COINS Trust is overseen by a Board of Trustees who meet six times a year to ensure that we meet our charitable aims, vision and values.  We also ensure that there is good financial stewardship and that the Trust's workers and volunteers are supported in everything they do.

Currently the Trustees number five people drawn from Newbury and Thatcham churches. They are Peter Bradley, Liz How (HR), Peter Kennedy (Treasurer) and Elizabeth Oxbury (Admin), together with Sian Lupton who is the chairman of the Trustees.  We always welcome new people; so if you have a heart for the work we do and would like to join the Trustee team, please contact us at:
